HOW TO WRITE website copy + CHATGPT prompts

You’re ready to create your website. Maybe you’ve even hired a designer, but now they want you to provide website copy. This is often where a lot of my clients get hung up. I can create a beautiful layout and function but the only person who knows your business is you. Web designers provide the aesthetic but we need you to provide the words.

Inside your head, you know your business inside and out but how can you know what should and shouldn’t be on your website?

Here are some tips for creating GREAT website copy.

  1. Less is more - FOR REAL. You don’t need to come up with big long paragraphs of expertly written copy. Our current online culture prefers visuals over words. Gone are the days of reading big chunks of text.

Try to explain your business in one liners and taglines.

  2. Keep it authentic - Yes, your website does need to look and sound professional but it also needs to be an accurate representation of you and your business.

Don’t over professionalize your text - be you!

  3. Brain dump time - To start, open up a document and describe all the different pieces of your business - how you got started, growth, about you, about your team, what you do best, who your clients are, what your clients say, and finally - what products/services you offer. Your web designer likely will not use all of your copy but having the full overview can help them tell your story visually. You can also use parts of this when you follow the ChatGPT prompts below.

You know your business best. Get it all out.

  4. Build your pages - This is where you can start to take the large chunks of copy and break it down into bite-sized readable pieces.

Start to segment that information into pages - Home, About, Services, Testimonials, etc.

  5. Follow a layout - Having a checklist is super helpful. Most web pages follow a similar pattern.
